What is Dual Power Automatic Transfer Switch?

A Dual Power Automatic Transfer Switch is a device that automatically switches the electrical load between two power sources, typically:

  1. Primary power source – usually the utility/grid supply.
  2. Secondary power source – usually a generator or backup supply.

Its main job is to ensure continuous power to critical loads without manual intervention.

How Does Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Works?

  • Normal Operation (Primary Power Available):
    • The ATS senses that the primary source is healthy (voltage, frequency, phase).
    • The switch connects the load to the primary source.
    • The secondary source (backup generator) stays off or on standby.
  • Detection of Power Loss:
    • If the ATS detects primary power failure (voltage drops, frequency abnormal, or total outage):
      • It waits a short preset delay to avoid unnecessary switching for transient issues.
      • The ATS then signals the backup generator to start (if applicable).
  • Switching to Secondary Power:
    • Once the backup generator is running and stable, the ATS disconnects the primary source.
    • It connects the load to the secondary source automatically.
    • The system continues running without interruption.
  • Restoration of Primary Power:
    • The ATS continuously monitors the primary source.
    • When primary power is restored and stable, the ATS may:
      • Switch back to the primary source after a preset delay.
      • Shut down the generator if used.
  • Safety Interlocking:
    • The ATS prevents both sources from connecting at the same time, avoiding backfeeding that could damage equipment or cause accidents.

When Do We Need To Use ATS?

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is used whenever uninterrupted power is important and you have two power sources (usually a utility supply and a backup generator). Let’s break it down clearly.

Situations Where ATS is Used

  1. Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities.
  • Critical medical equipment (ventilators, monitors, MRI machines) cannot lose power.
  • ATS ensures immediate switch to backup generator if grid power fails.
2. Data Centers
  • Servers, networking equipment, and storage systems require continuous uptime.
  • Any downtime can cause data loss or huge financial impact.
  • ATS keeps systems running while preventing power surges.
3. Industrial Plants&Manufacturing
  • Machines and production lines often cannot tolerate power interruptions.
  • ATS ensures that critical operations continue, avoiding production loss or damage.

4. Commercial Buildings

  • Office buildings, malls, and banks may use ATS to maintain lighting, HVAC, and security systems during outages.
  • Keeps safety and operations functional without manual intervention.

5. Critical Infrastructure

  • Water treatment plants, traffic signals, telecom stations, and airports rely on ATS to ensure continuous essential services.

6. Remote or Off-Grid Locations

  • Areas with unstable or unreliable grid power (rural areas, mining sites, construction sites).
  • ATS allows automatic switch to a generator when the main supply fails.

7. Residential Use (High-End Homes)

  • Homes with home generators can use ATS to automatically maintain comfort and safety during outages.
  • Often combined with solar plus battery systems for dual-source reliability.

JOTTA's ATS have transformed our power management systems; their reliability and efficiency are unmatched. Highly recommended for any industrial application!
